On January 29th, Beck will release a double-disc deluxe version of his 1996 album Odelay that includes sixteen B-sides and compilation tracks that haven’t seen U.S. release before, as well as two never-before-released songs from the album’s original sessions produced by the Dust Brothers: “Inferno” and “Gold Chains.” The second disc also includes remixes by Aphex Twin, Mario Caldato Jr. and U.N.K.L.E., plus “Burro,” a Spanish-language rendition of “Jackass” recorded with a mariachi band.

Woo! Inferno! Yes! Gold Chains? Ok, cool!

I’m hoping there’s more new stuff than that (original Debra?), but I’m happy enough that we finally get Inferno.

(featuring James Lavelle) remix of “Where It’s At,” and Aphex Twin and Mickey P. remixes of “Devil’s Haircut” (titled “Richard’s Hairpiece” and “American Wasteland,” respectively). Also heard are the once international-only b-sides “Clock,” “Electric Music and The Summer People,” “Lemonade,” “SA-5,” “Feather In Your Cap,” “Erase The Sun,” “000.000,” “Brother,” “Trouble All My Days,” “Strange Invitation,” “Devil Got My Woman,” (a cover of the Skip James classic recorded at the original Sun Studios in Memphis before they closed their doors) and “Burro” — a Spanish language version of “Jackass” recorded with a mariachi band.

That pretty much covers the whole tracklist, so it looks like the only new material is Inferno and Gold Chains. I guess we’ll have to keep waiting on that original Debra track.

the white stripes’ conquest single/ep is out on itunes in the us and canada, though i’m not sure about the rest of the world. beck produced the b-sides and appears on two of them.

As many of you might know, Beck remixed David Bowie’s song “Seven” a few years ago. As fewer of you might know, there were actually two separate Beck remixes of this that were released (eventually). As even fewer of you might know, Beck actually made three remixes but the third and final one has never been released except on internal record company promos and test CDs. Until now?

This coming Tuesday Columbia Records is releasing a ten-CD box set of David Bowie’s more adventurous work, expanding each of his recent Outside, Earthling, Hours, Heathen, and Reality albums with a second disc. More than 60 remixes and alternative versions pad the set, highlighted by his work with Trent Reznor, Beck and Moby.

Obviously this does not mention which Beck remix(es) will be included, but here’s hoping we finally get to hear that third remix.

So a few weeks back, The White Stripes announced an upcoming single with a “special guest,” and yes, as any good Beck fan thought, the possibility of it being Beck had to have been high. 

 And we were right!  Pitchfork has the story… Beck produced the b-sides for the upcoming White Stripes’ “Conquest” single, and played on a couple of them.

A recap of all the times Beck and the Stripes have worked together (this is from memory, so I make no promise for it being complete):

1. Beck appeared in the Stripes’ video for “The Hardest Button To Button” (see it here).

2. Beck showed up to play bass on “The Denial Twist” at the Stripes’ show in LA in August 2005.

3. Jack showed up to play guitar with Beck & Smokey Hormel at their show in Detroit in August 2002.  They played “99,” “Last Fair Deal Gone Down,” and “Cold Brains.”

4. Jack plays bass on “Go It Alone” on Guero, and they reportedly did a few other songs together then too (but it’s the only one that’s out yet).

5. In a photo gallery on beck.com, Meg was pictured, hanging out with Beck and his band on a boat in Australia (I think in 2003).

6. Beck covered “Black Math” once on stage (a bootleg surfaced of this show, but it has not fallen into the hands of Beck collectors yet).

That’s all I got. 

There was a media report or two back not long ago that Beck was working on a song with Shirley Manson for her solo album.  I had added it as “Unknown Shirley Manson Collaboration” on Almost A Ghost.

Turns out, this rumor is not true.  The media lies!  Don’t believe everything that you read!  Get a parking violation and a maggot on your sleeve!

Beck’s right-hand man, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, does and has worked with Shirley and he debunked it.

Beck is, however, going to be on Sia Furler’s upcoming album, so look for that!

Beck’s performance of ‘Nausea’ on SNL is going to be on a new CD. The disc, Live From SNL! Performances From Saturday Night Live is going on sale Sept. 9, exclusively at Target.

Two things bother me about this. First, September 9 is a crazy-ass date to release a CD; they normally come out on Tuesdays in North America. Second, ‘Clap Hands’ from the same show was way awesomer! That’s what should have been included, screw ‘Nausea’.

I also heard recently about some new SNL music DVD, but I’m too lazy to look for that right now. Anybody else hear about this? Is Beck on it?

Great, so right after updating for the first time in forever, it’s already out of date

“Timebomb” will be released on iTunes on Monday!

And Beck put up a cover of Lee Hazlewood’s “Forget Marie” on beck.com.  They recorded it last year, and he put it up in tribute to Lee, who died very recently.

Hello, sorry for the lack of updates, but Beck’s been quiet.  But there’s a few new things to note here.

 1. “Timebomb”–a song Beck has played live a few times–will be a digital single soon, according to the .com.  No word on when exactly, or where (probably iTunes, as Beck’s album covers are all over iPod commercials).  Hopefully there will be b-sides!  “Timebomb” is a fun song.  There will also apparently be a 12″ vinyl version too.

 2. So for a while we’ve heard about the Deluxe 10th Anniversary version of Odelay.  It has not happened, and it has been 11 years since Odelay was released.  But I’m told that Odeluxe is still being worked on, and a release is still planned.  Stay optimistic!  (There’s also plans for another deluxe version of an older album, but I can’t tell you which one quite yet!)

 3. Beck recently put up a nice tribute to Jeremy Blake on .com, and promises a tribute to Ingmar Bergman soon.  I guess there is a reason to go to beck.com now!  Keep using the site for things, Beck.

 4. Beck’s been in and out of the studio for the last few months, doing different things.  I posted about some of them before on here.  It is still, as usual, up in the air what will come out and when.

5. Also Beck’s band has released an album (Beck’s not on it).  They’re called Wounded Cougar, and you need the record.  Even if you are not interested in hard rockin’ facemeltin’ heavy metal, you probably do want to support a bunch of amazing musicians putting out their own records completely independently.  Go to their myspace for info on how to get the record.
