Notes:
Beck's Odelay tour hits New York for the first time, playing two nights at the famous Supper Club. This is the first night of the two. (One thing I found on the web had someone asking who the Japanese band was that opened for Beck, implying Cibo Matto was there. But everything else I can figure is that they'd left the tour by then and been replaced by Money Mark. Possible they both opened, I guess.)
It's a very solid performance, if not sounding a tad mechanical. Strange too in that this show lacks "Jack-ass," "New Pollution" and "Minus."
Some highlights are the way the band slides into "Debra," at that point mostly an unknown slo-jam. The crowd eats it up. After "Debra", a chill "Pay No Mind" with the band shows up, and then the acoustic set. Beck talks about how "Truckdrivin Neighbors" is a "one string song," and that one day he'd like to do a song that's just one note ("fuck chords!"). Amazing how dynamic this song is when Beck plays it by himself!
After the acoustic set, Beck asks his band if they want to do "Ramshackle." I guess they agree. There has never been many live versions of this song, but it's beautiful to hear.
After the folky quiet stuff, Beck announces it's "back to bizness!" and they bust out "Where It's At," "Sissyneck," "High 5" and "Beercan." (Though they do toss "Derelict" in there too.)
