| In June 2010, Beck and Thurston Moore did their Yanni Record Club project. In July, Thurston began recording his new solo album at home in Massachusetts. Then in October/November 2010, he went to Beck's studio to finish the record. Beck produced the entire thing, helped with some of the arrangements. He also brought in his live rhythm section (Bram Inscore and Joey Waronker). A violinist and harpist joined them as well. As Thurston wrote, "Beck and I discussed many players we thought would compliment the record in all its improvisatory experimentation and focus on song-slip. We decided that Samara Lubelski (violin) and Mary Lattimore (harp) had to play and we invited them to join us. We fed them cantaloupes, raw milks, doughnuts, Zuma sushi and Lily’s fish tacos. And we threw shadows into the sun."
The album is entirely Thurston playing acoustic songs (a rarity in Sonic Youth). Beck continually adds brilliant touches, such that it is hard to imagine these songs without his production. Some dramatic violin, light rhythm, occasional synth strings... it is all very classy and beautiful. Also, for the record, there is an iTunes bonus track if you purchase Demolished Thoughts there. Beck, as far as I can tell, had nothing to do with it. (It's just Thurston and an acoustic guitar.) | ||
